If you have an extremely informative website, you can really benefit from getting listed in directory sites (like Dmoz, for example). I have a relatively informational site, New York Traveler.net, that is full of stuff about New York State. I tried getting into various directories (like Dmoz and Yahoo Directory) long ago, without success. I am not quite sure if I didn’t fill out the multitudes of forms correctly (they are quite laborious) or if my websites did not qualify. I’ve heard that getting listed into a directory site is extremely difficult. However. it has many benefits– increased traffic, increased ranking, increased search engine relevancy and ranking, and etc.
There are some companies that offer to submit to directories for you; for example, Directory Maximizer. They offer a few strategies for getting your qualifying website listed:
- Submit your site over a period of five weeks (no extra cost for this)
- Submit by PageRank of the directory
- Submit your website to dozens of directories over the course of a year
You can see that getting a foot in the door, so to speak, in website sirectory listings is a rather lengthy and arduous process. It’s no wonder that some folks have formed groups to do it for you. The cost is so low that it is often well worth the expense of having some other company submit your sites for you. Directory Maximizer charges 14 cents for every directory submission per website. So if you decide to submit one of your sites to 100 directories, that’s only a $14 one-time charge. I think that is extremely reasonable.
If you have an informational type of website and are looking to soup it up in the SEO world, think about directory listings. It can be well worth it!
