It’s just amazing how you can do EVERYTHING online these days: working, banking, investing. And did you know that you can trade stocks online? You no longer have to retain a broker, now you can manage your investments and tradings with an online stock broker, with TradeMONSTER.

TradeMONSTER is a state-of-the-art, customizable trading platform, rated 4-star by Barron’s. At TradeMONSTER, you can trade stocks, options, mutual funds, bonds, and more with ease, all within a fully personalized trading screen tailored to your interests. There is no software or downloading required– you register and set up your profile online. It’s an extremely classy interface, too– much better designed, intuitive, and faster than other trading platforms. I love the Watchlist capability of the website– very classy and speedy. Financial market data streams in real time! This is far superior to other trading platforms! There are also very helpful articles, educational resources, FAQs, tips, and tutorials about the software and more.

TradeMONSTER is not new, actually– it spawned from the successful optionMONSTER.com, a financial think tank of sorts. From that grew the idea of an online brokerage program, fully customizable and in tune with clients’ needs. There’s a short flash video demo on the homepage, and TradeMONSTER looks very impressive. Check out the website, TradeMONSTER.com, for more information. If monitoring your investments, and buying and selling stocks online with low brokerage fees and high quality useability is important to you, TradeMONSTER is what you are looking for.

Free Photo Editing Software

I found another very nice (and free!) photo editing software program: Photoscape. It’s very nice. It’s  a lot like Google’s Picasa, but without… Google. Which I prefer.

Here’s the self-described key features of Photoscape:

Viewer: View your folders photos, slideshow
Editor: resizing, brightness and color adjustment, white balance, backlight correction, frames, balloons, mosaic mode, adding text, drawing pictures, cropping, filters, red eye removal, blooming
Batch editor: Batch editing multiple photos
Page: Make one photo by merging multiple photos at the page frame
Combine: Make one photo by attaching multiple photos vertically or horizontally
Animated GIF: Make one animation photo with multiple photos
Print: Print portrait shot, carte de visite, passport photo
Splitter: Divide a photo into multiple parts
Screen Capture: Capture your screenshot and save it
Color Picker: Zoom in screen on images, search and pick the color
Rename: Change photo file names in batch mode
Raw Converter: Convert RAW to JPG

I just love the batch editing ability. I process hundreds of photos at a time sometimes– takes me HOURS. Resizing or sharpening all at once is such a time saver. I love Photoscape! And the price can’t be beat.

Hacking… For a Living?

This probably comes as no surprise in this day and age: could you or would you be able to make a living, hacking software?

I think it would be COOL!

I do a little “hacking” from time to time. Now, I’m not trying to access bank records or anything like that at all- but I’ve looked into cracking passwords, intercepting and filtering data, and I’m certainly interested in computer software, security news and database work Today, as the world and all its data is being digitalized, IT Security is more important than ever. There is a great need for computer experts and people who understand data and its languages. This is really great news for the moral computer geeks out there (the new term is “Ethical Hacking“) who more interested in using their computer skills to help mankind than to steal, kill, and destroy mankind. “Hacking,” for lack of a better term, can be very beneficial in today’s digital world.

And would you believe that there is a school, with instructors, who will help hackers-to-be learn skills and techniques? One such place is EC-Council. They offer online and live instruction in:

    -Security Fundamentals
    -Ethical Hacking
    -Penetration Testing
    -Computer Forensics
    -Disaster Recovery
    -Secure Programming

This looks fascinating to me! I would love to do something like this. I love learning about data and organization and how stuff works. And being a moral person, this kind of work is right up my alley. So how do you think “Ethical Hacker” would look on a resume? How about you? Would you ever get into a career as an Ethical Hacker, helping companies with computer security, discovering and finding weaknesses, or playing detective for leaking information or criminals? If you’re interested in becoming a Certified Ethical Hacker, or are the least bit curious about this new and growing kind of work, check out the website for more information.

Bad Behavior is a GO!!

To the non-blogger, that title may look strange indeed…

I’m referring to Bad Behavior, the WordPress plugin. I installed it. Remember how I lamented my spam problems? How I was inundated with hundreds of spam comments per day? Well, I installed the plugin called Bad Behavior, and LOOK at my spam count for the past two days!

Photobucket

I am impressed, indeed. Thumbs up for Bad Behavior!

Need Car Parts? Look Online!

Car parts are INCREDIBLY expensive. It’s almost mind-blowing, they are so costly. A set of front brakepads for my minivan costs about $50, and the tax is almost 10% here in Upstate New York. And then there’s the added cost of driving out to the car parts store and back. Ugh.

If you’re in need of car parts, you may want to do what I’ve been starting to do: look online. CarPartsWarehouse.com has a nice selection of car parts for dozens and dozens of models for every year. They also offer free shipping and guarantee the best prices, fastest shipping prices on the Internet (wow!), excellent and comprehensive tech information and resources, and superior customer service. That’s a lot of guarantees! Check out their website at CarPartsWarehouse.com or call toll-free 1-800-565-5021 for information. Why pay more than you have to?

Finding the HP Elite Wireless Keyboard

I work at the computer just about all day, typing. That’s how I justify my fussiness when it comes to computer monitors and keyboards. :) Seriously, I am REALLY fussy about my peripheral equipment. And I think I’ve finally found my dream keyboard! It’s the HP Elite Wireless Keyboard.

Now, I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would get a wireless keyboard– I spend enough money on batteries, for my camera and all the kids’ toys and bangles, ya know? It’s gotten to the point where I’ll be soon needing to buy batteries like industrial supplies, in bulk! Sheesh! But the HP Elite is, so far, not a battery eater… and really, it would be worth it even if it was! What a great keyboard!

The keyboard was not easy to find. Only Hewlett-Packard sells it, on their website. I first came across the keyboard while browsing electronics at a store. It comes as a peripheral for a new computer out by HP, a touch-screen all-in-one computer. The computer is pretty neat but I can’t imagine getting a touch screen. I’m not “handy” like that (I prefer tools like the mouse), and I’d be washing the thing CONTINUALLY. Not practical. But I saw the keyboard that came with it and fell in love.

After seeing the HP model, I went in search of the keyboard, to check it’s price and buy it, if it was reasonable. But nobody stocked it! I searched online, tried search engine shopping, checked all the electronics stores I knew, I asked sales reps at the stores, etc. Nothing! The sales reps said the keyboard was not available for independent purchase. The manager at Staples said I’d probably have to buy the HP Touch Screen computer ($1300) iif I wanted to get this kind of keyboard. Haha, NO THANKS. $1300 just to get a keyboard?! Is he insane?

So a guy at Best Buy advised me to check the HP site. Even then, it was difficult finding it, because the keyboard has no name or identifying number besides the model number. And when I punched that number into the HP site, I got a lot of unhelpful search results. Finally I found it, buried in search results, where it is named HP Elite Wireless. And it was– amazingly- affordable! $30 with free shipping! I was blown away. It came in the mail, last week.

HP Elite front

HP Elite side

You can see that it’s very thin, with those Scrabble-like tiles that I admire. The HP Elite is a lot like the Apple aluminum keyboard I like so much (I have trouble using the Apple keyboard with my Vista machine), with its low profile. I’ve searched for thin keyboards, but haven’t had much success finding anything suitable and affordable. The closest I ever got was seeing a Kensington model, with a price tag of $80!!! Whoooaaaa! No thanks!

I love the HP. It was a breeze to install– just plug the wireless USB device into the computer, insert the included batteries, and I was all set. The two AAA batteries are still at 100% charge (there’s a keyboard battery monitor that will install in your tasktray). The range is excellent. I was able to type across the room, 20 feet away. I haven’t tried the keyboard to see if it works behind walls yet.

The low profile of the keys is very nice. I type all day, and my hands get so tired. The low-profile reduces fatigue. It’s also a simple keyboard– no bells and whistles. I have no need for magnifying/media/lock buttons all over my keyboard. I’m relieved to have JUST the basics for this one (although the HP does have a very convenient Sleep button). She’s a Plain Jane, but she’s doing the job better than any other!

I like it. It’s stable and suited for PCs, unlike the Apple aluminum (that kept installing and uninstalling throughout the day, it was weird). So I’m very happy with my purchase. If you’re looking for a thin, simple, wireless keyboard– I recommend the HP Elite Wireless!
