Spam and More Spam

Wow. In FOUR DAYS, this is how much comment spam I’ve gotten for this blog. And I’m only halfway through the fourth day!

spam

Unbelievable, really. There were 57 pages of comment spam! There is no way I could have time to go through them all. I really wish these bots could be destroyed. Askimet grabs the spam so the comments are not automatically published, but I still have them in my comment admin page, where I have to delete them… wow. Disgusting.

I installed the plugin Bad Behavior, to reduce some of this clutter. I hope it works. Comment spam can bring a blog down by overloading it with too many requests, causing the server to crash. Jerks.

Amazing! I’ve not had that problem. Is this the kind of thing I get to look forward to one day?

Haha! Yeah. Hawg, it is… it’s probably the worst thing about a WordPress blog, all this stinkin’ spam. But the blog is MINE MINE MINE, and not Google’s!

  3. I was having this talk with another blogger this morning, in fact. It’s sad that Akismet has picked up WAY more spam than my hit counter has lodged legitimate hits!

I used to have problems like that all the time until I added the plugin WP-Spamfree Since then (it’s been 2 weeks) and maybe I’ve had 3 or 4, but they were actually legit comments that I got to approve!

I never thought Akismet was that good. I use the Bad Behavior but I also installed the WP-Ban option from lesterchan and have satisfaction in knowing that when I add those IP addresses to my list they get a nice message saying you are banned from my site and see how many times they actually try to come back.

As your blog becomes more popular (I see you are in the top 100k on Alexa with this one), you can expect more spam.

It never works, really, even where the spam comments filter through, because people never click through to those spam sites, but still they insist!!

There are a number of really good plugins created to help solve this problem. I do have WP Ban installed, but because I have so many blogs, I just found no time to add in all the IPs of all that spam I was getting. I still try to work with it from time to time, but I needed something automatic.

I installed bad Behavior just a day or two ago– I am impressed. It has reduced the spam comments, so far, about 98%. Impresssive!

How are you getting so much? I block IP addresses from spammers and use Sabre for registration and I get hardly any spam.
