OMG Another Wordpress Update!

I knew it was bound to happen… I just didn’t think it would happen a week after the previous update!! Wow, lol. Well, I am thankful that the Wordpress Dudes (as I affectionately call them) are on their toes with security issues.

Yesterday a vulnerability was discovered: a specially crafted URL could be requested that would allow an attacker to bypass a security check to verify a user requested a password reset. As a result, the first account without a key in the database (usually the admin account) would have its password reset and a new password would be emailed to the account owner. This doesn’t allow remote access, but it is very annoying.

We fixed this problem last night and have been testing the fixes and looking for other problems since then. Version 2.8.4 which fixes all known problems is now available for download and is highly recommended for all users of WordPress.

So I guess I know what I will be doing this afternoon. :-p

Wordpress has now made it so easy to update, I thank them for that. In a nutshell, here’s how to do it:

  • First thing: BACK UP YOUR BLOG.
  • I do database backups just about every week (log into my web host’s cPanel and use their Backup Wizard). I also then use the “Export” feature in the Wordpress Dashboard. This saves all posts and comments in an XML file. It just saves the information, not your blog’s theme nor photos nor other dynamic content. I made a quick video tutorial about How to Exporting Your Blog in an XML File. It’s an “on the safe side” kind of backup tool.

  • Update and then disable plugins.
  • I used to disable all my plugins before doing any upgrade. Plugins are third-party software, and therefore may conflict with each other during the upgrade. However, for the past three recent upgrades, I have attempted leaving my plugins enabled, and I have had no problems. I do, however, ALWAYS upgrade my plugins before attempting my Wordpress upgrade.

  • Click the Wordpress “Please update now” link at the top of your Admin page.
  • This notification shows up on all your Wordress admin pages. I usually go to my Dashboard and proceed from there. The link will take you to a page within your admin site, giving a few scanty details, and clicking the link.

  • Go slowly, read everything, don’t be in a hurry to click the links.
  • I take my time whenever I upgrade. I make sure the kids are preoccupied, I am *relatively* clear-headed, and not in a hurry. I’ve had problems when I have been too click-happy. Depending on the speed of your web host’s server transactions, it may take a few more seconds to complete. Don’t rush anything!

  • If something happens, call your web host.
  • I have Hostgator as my web host (see the button to their website in my sidebar) and I have been thrilled with their service and support. I recommend them more than any other host (and believe me, I’ve had a lot of hosts). If your blog has problems, give them a call. You will have a database backup that you can fall back on (you DID make that backup, right??!), and they can reinstate the older version, and help you upgrade to the newer one. But I have never had any problem whatsoever with the new Wordpress upgrade feature– it’s run AMAZINGLY smoothly.

    Hope this helps!

    Finding Help Online

This post isn’t about finding help online– it’s about finding help online! haha! I’m not talking about finding technical help online, but emotional and mental support online– the ability of online communities to enrich our lives and help us overcome problems and obstacles. Social networking is hot right now (I do a lot of it as a professional blogger), but a good deal of social networking is filled with incessant blabber about meaningless things like celebrities, amusements, and other drivel. But some folks have taken it on themselves to use social networking as a service to help people. How cool is it that?? Social networking is amazing– through it we can meet new people from all around the world, get advice or support, and receive and give the accountability we need.

The “wiki” is a unique form of social networking. A wiki is simply defined as “the simplest online database that could possibly work.” It’s basically a website where users can create and edit pages using their browser. Wikipedia is probably the most well-known wiki, but there are loads of others.

One such community wiki is InTheRooms. This is an online, editable database of meetings. Right now, the InTheRooms Meetings database includes current Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Overeaters Anonymous (OA), and Gamblers Anonymous (GA) meetings, and they expect to add more. The goal is to help users help each other, and notify users of particular groups of meetings and updates. Consider it an adaptable, malleable encyclopedia or phone book of meetings! Information is up-to-date and current, and all information submitted is moderated. InTheRooms is currently adding more groups to their wiki, so it’s a great one to monitor.

Social networking has come of age!

    Finding A Good Tech Forum

Good forums are hard to find. When I have a tech problem to solve, I often do a keyword search, and get hundreds of results that often lead me to forums. The only problem with this is, is that MOST forums seem more concerned that the topic is posted in the *right* thread, or that the members treat their moderators with respect. Have you noticed this? For example, I recently did a search for an AVG Anti-virus problem- a friend of mine was getting notices by her AVG program, saying she had a slew of viruses in her computer. She asked me for help, so I did a search for the virus names. I think I visited about 25 various forums, all of them useless! Here’s why:

Confused User: HELP!!! The trojan horse XYZ showed up in my google updater last week and this week it was in a restore folder in my system volume information folder. My computer is acting strange and I am on a relative’s computer to ask for help here. My house is going to foreclose and my bank account will be drained unless I get some help fast!

Moderator: Your question is posted in the wrong thread. Please do not post your questions in the wrong place, it makes us very angry and we care more about forum regulations than helping people.
Follow the lengthy and confusing directions here:

BillyBobJoker: Hey, you need new laptop or some good diet pill review? Go see some hot deals here! www.billionsofflashingbannerads.org

Moderator2: U 2? Ya, 1 iz al U need 2 totalee rek ur hard drve. Da R izz no help 4 u, man. Good luk.

Confused User: All I asked for was some help! I don’t know where to put my question, because there are 100 forum topics and half of them have flashing banner ads and weird World of Warcraft animated images! I can’t use my own computer, so I’m stuck driving out to my mother-in-law’s house. Does anyone have any help for me?

Moderator: [Confused User booted from Forum for posting question in wrong thread.]

    And so it goes….. :-p

ANYWAY, I’m hoping I found a good tech forum, a reliable one that I can go back to when I have questions. It’s hosted by the folks who run a very good e-zine newsletter, WinXPNews. The forum is here. It’s brand new, with only a few threads and replies right now. But feel free to take a look at it, add your two cents! Good forums require good participation and good users. I recommend the e-zine, I’ve been getting it for years and it’s always filled with relevant tech information (and fun stuff, too). They recently started up a VistaNews e-zine and accompanying website, too.

    Foreclosure Guide Online

Need some online advice? The Internet abounds with assistance. Personally, I’m amazed by all the stuff out there: manuals, how-to’s, etc. The latest tool I’ve seen is the very timely 2009 Loan Modification Guide: Saving Your Home From Foreclosure guide online. It’s a free guide, and it has some helpful information with 20+ pages of advice about foreclosures and how to prevent one on your home. The website has a form you must fill out (name, email, phone number) for you to be sent the guide. And filling out the form also gives you the opportunity to be contacted by a professional who can help any problems you might have with your housing financial situation (remember to either opt-out if you can, or to give your extraneous webmail email if you prefer to keep your personal email address private). The website has some other articles and information concerning the housing market and personal finances. A good resource!

    When Vista Hangs During Startup

I saw this in one of my technology news e-magazines, and want to post it here for anyone else having this problem. There seems to be an issue with Windows Vista machines “hanging” (freezing, or, the screen stays black and the Windows logo never appears) after you hit the power button to the computer, or restart the computer. I had this happen the other day with my new computer, and it freaked me out. I’m not 100% sure that this issue is related to my problem, but I’m keeping my eyes on the situation and applying this fix if it becomes necessary. Here’s the scoop:

When you press the power button or click Restart on the Start menu to start a computer that is running Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2008, the system startup may fail. The system stops responding (hangs) and shows a black screen where the Windows logo typically appears. Additionally, the mouse pointer does not appear, and the hard disk drive (HDD) light does not flash. When the HDD light does not flash, it means that the HDD is not being accessed at that time.

When this problem occurs, you have to force the power off. Then, you must press the power button to start the computer again.

This problem occurs because of a deadlock in the remote procedure call (RPC) component.

Go to the Microsoft hotfix page to download the hotfix. A “hotfix” is the name given to fix a fix. Microsoft Updates routinely “fix” bugs and other problems, but sometimes the fixes create problems. Thus, the hotfix was born. Be sure to read the entire page of instructions, to make sure that this issue applies to your situation.
