Computer Hope

At wit’s end and have no geek in the family to call for help? There’s a really cool online service called Computer Hope. Guess what- it’s free! I think this is terrific!

The website itself is very helpful, with a “word of the day,” latest updates and news, and some common questions and solutions. Besides an FAQ section and basic search feature, Computer Hope also has online chat tech support, or you can email them with questions.

They also have a listing of drivers to download when you need them, too. An excellent resource! This is a great one to bookmark or to forward to a computer newbie.

Debt Help Online

Toooooo much debt. Ouch! I am not alone in this. Most Americans, and most people in Western developed nations, have a large amount of consumer debt. This is in part because our governments and banking systems encourage debt, due to a skewered view of national wealth. It is believed that debt equals wealth, because debt supposedly equals worth. If you have debt, you have credit. If you have credit, it comes from the banks who have a high opinion of your financial wealth and worth.

However, over time and with inflation, everyone is in debt, has no savings, and owes money to the banks. This idea of debt equaling wealth is a very short-sided and unrealistic view of economics.

Nonetheless, we all find ourselves in this mess, so what are we going to do?

The Internet provides a lot of information. Of course, information can only take us so far; we must discipline ourselves to cut spending and increase income and savings. Yet a little information can go a long way. There are many, many websites and organizations that can help you understand the system, help you realize how you got into debt, and help you get out of debt and avoid bankruptcy. One such site is ClearDebt. They are a company in the UK, and have an excellent program called IVA, “individual voluntary agreements.” These are suitable for people who need to negotiate their debts with their creditors and make a payment plan. This can be a last scenario for people on the brink of bankruptcy.

ClearDebt does other things. They can help:

  • Slash your debt
  • Freeze the interest rates
  • Stop the creditors from harrassing you
  • Give free advice about debt management

ClearDebt does not give loans and they do not charge you for their advice. The website has lots of information; if you are needful of some advice and information about managing your debt, help is only a click away. Ah, the beauty of the Internet! Get help and let’s stop this vicious cycle! And let’s hope the governments stop it, too!

The Heroes at Home Registry at Sears

Here’s a wonderful registry program for the holidays: Sears Heroes at Home Wish Registry. Sears is sponsoring a wish list registry for our servicemen and servicewomen overseas.

In a nutshell, Sears provides gift cards to military families. (These gift cards are not tax-deductible). Since military moms and military dads are away in places like Afghanistan and Iraq, serving our president, their families miss them during the holidays. The Sears Heroes at Home Wish Registry provides a little something special to the families here, without their military loved ones. It’s especially sweet for the kids of military families.

You can donate to this program. Check out the Sears website for information on how to participate. You may not be serving in the Persian Gulf or anything, but you can be a hero, too! You can help bring gifts and necessary items to our military families in need. The Sears Heroes at Home Wish Registry has supplied over 30,000 military familes! Let’s make that number much larger. We know how trying and how tough the holiday season can be, especially for military families. Not only are military moms and dads (and sons and daughters) away from home for the holidays, these servicepeople are often in harm’s way. It helps the servicemen and women to know that people in the U.S. care about them and their families. So not only do you donations help a family in need, they give encouragement and support at a time when it is most needed. Please check out the website for more information.

Own Technology, Don’t Let Technology Own You

Way back when machines started to appear in the employment industry, machines were touted as the things that would make our lives better and more leisurely. Have you seen this happen in your life? I haven’t. I think our lives are much more hectic and fast-paced than ever before! As a matter of fact, Dr. Kathleen Hall of the Stress Institute is among many calling the stress the “epidemic of the 21st century.” The Stress Institute was founded in 1997 by award-winning author, Dr. Hall. The institute is a company of physicians and professionals dedicated to getting the word out about stress-causing elements in our fast-paced modern lifestyles, and working with clients toward stress reduction.

I’ve read studies that stress is the cause of a variety of illnesses and diseases. I know that I am susceptible to stress as I get older, and I feel terrible from it. I’ve been trying to build a new lifestyle of stress-free living; memorizing Bible verses has been very helpful for me! Things like exercise and setting aside parts of the day for peaceful moments are just a few things a person can do to relieve stress. The Stress Institute helps you to realize what’s making you stressed out, and it has an excellent website with media resources, articles (there’s a terrific one on work/life balance), tips and information to give you ideas for relieving stress in your life. Check it out for some practical and simple ideas. Don’t let our fast-paced society with all its consuming gadgets get to you!

A Lesson to Be Learned

Over the weekend, I had some technical problems with my other blog, New York Traveler.net. The comments features on the blog were totally unoperational. A day previously, I had updated the Akismet plugin (Akismet is a software plugin that traps spam comments on blogs). I couldn’t be sure that the Akismet plugin was related to my problems, because I had updated it on my other blog and the comments were working fine. It was totally baffling.

After going through the usual recourse (disabling plugins one at a time, changing the blog theme, searching forums), I finally called my web host, Bluehost. The first call was a disaster: the technician said he couldn’t figure out what was wrong, so goodbye. :-p If you’re wondering why so many bloggers are leaving Bluehost, that’s probably a good reason right there.

But I called again, because I had discovered some odd language in my error logs, at my cPanel for Bluehost. You’d think the technician would have checked the logs?! Is he too busy watching his HDTV show or something?! Well, I read over the error logs and saw that for some reason, comments were being regarded as “duplicate content.” I couldn’t decode the language, so I called and talked with a gentleman named John. Wow, was he courteous and helpful! John looked at the error log and said that perhaps my blog needed a little housecleaning. He said blog databases sometimes get full of various extra stuff (blogs are extremely flexible, because so much happens with them- posting, drafting, commenting, moderating comments, etc). John said that sometimes all you have to do is a little database repair– and this is as easy as clicking a button for the process to go automatically.

Every cPanel is a little different for every host, so I can’t begin to address all the variables here. But know that if something has just suddenly gone awry, consider repairing and/or optimizing your database. A call to your host’s tech support can help you find out how to do this. For me, I just had to go to my cPanel’s database wizard, and click “repair database.” It took less than 10 seconds. And guess what? PROBLEM SOLVED!!! Thanks, John!

Testing Your Blog’s Loading Speed

How fast does your blog load? If it takes too long, you lose readers. Things like large badges, buttons, graphics, music, autoplay video, and other gadgets drain your load time. Here’s a website I found to test your blog’s loading speed: Pingdom Tools. It’s free to use. This is how they say it works:

The Full Page Test loads a complete HTML page including all objects (images, CSS, JavaScripts, RSS, Flash and frames/iframes). It mimics the way a page is loaded in a web browser.

The load time of all objects is shown visually with time bars.

You can view the list of objects either in load order or as a hierarchy. The hierarchy view allows you to see which objects are linked to in for example a CSS file.

Every test also shows general statistics about the loaded page such as the total number of objects, total load time, and size including all objects.

Note: This version doesn’t load objects included in JavaScripts. We have also put a limit on the number and size of the objects that are loaded (to prevent the tool from downloading movies, for example).

I see a lot of blogs everyday. Waaaay too many of them take up to 2 minutes to load! I know you love those buttons and twinkles and music, but to be honest– not many other people do. Of course, you should blog for yourself. After all, it’s your blog! But it also helps to be considerate to your visitors. If your blog takes longer than 30 seconds to load, that’s far too long. Consider removing the resouce-eating hogs on your blog. :)
