Web Design For Idiots

Hmm, well I sure hate to classify myself, but… this looks like a site I will need to frequent! ha! This is a site by fellow Entrecarder and CMF member, Lindsayanng. She’s a “girlie geek” who has tutorials about web design, and often reviews other blogs. She’s turning the tables a little– holding a contest for people who will review her blog! It’s the web design for idiots 500 free business card giveaway contest. Try your hand at reviewing her site, it’s not a difficult task — she’s looking for honest reviews! And the prizes are very nice: First prize is 500 business cards designed by the girlie geek herself. Second prize is a free 8×10 fine art print from bscphoto.com.

I like the blog, I recently came across it. I am a “self-made” geek as well, learning everything by trial and error and through tutorials on the Internet. I think there are a number of us gals around the ‘Net like that. :D

Back to the contest: the winner be chosen by Lindsayanng, who will use her incredible geeky powers of discrimination and taste, and she will judge according to your content, suggestions, and writing style. Use good grammar and spelling, too. Be sure to email Lindsayanng (reviews@webdesignforidiots.net) and leace a comment at the blog post to ensure she is aware of your magnus opus. Have fun!

Online Text Fixer Tool

I’ve got another goody coming out of my grab bag! I found this very cool site that will fix your text– called Text Fixer. It will fix all sorts of things:

  • Put text in alphabetical order
  • Capitalize sentences
  • Remove line breaks and whitespace
  • Create Javascript pop-up windows
  • And more…

I love the alphabetical order and remove line spaces features. I am fussy about my formatting– when I want a line break after the phrase “pet beds” or whatever, I don’t want a line break after the phrase! And I do a lot of alphabetizing, too. This makes it sooo easy.

Another handy site to bookmark!

More Quality Blog Themes

I’m always looking for more and varied blog themes for both WordPress and Blogger. Here are two new sites to add to your bookmarks. These sites have a large variety of themes and templates.

PYZAM Blogger Templates
eBlog Templates

Of course, because these sites offer free templates, you often have to endure advertisements for diet pills and/or class reunion websites. It’s up to you if you want to endure them or not. It’s for reasons such as these that ad blockers for browsers come in handy. :D

More Blogger Templates!

I just discovered some more terrific Blogger templates, all free for the taking. They are absolutely eye-popping! Blogger Buster has the list of them– a long list of them (beware, the page is very graphic heavy). I am very impressed with the styles. No more clunky Blogger templates! And these templates look easy to customize, too. Blogger blogs are really the way to go if you are new to blogging, want easy access (Google owns Blogger, and the sites are almost never down), and cheap hosting (free!) even if you buy your own domain. Blogger really can’t be beat. I think they should follow others’ examples and start offering some cool promotional items.

Enjoy the new templates, I know I will!

Shared Web Hosting from Concentric

I am keeping my eyes peeled for shared web hosting businesses. I’m looking for better service (if you read my blogs, you know what problems I have with my current web host), and I hope to compile a list of hosting companies, as a handy resource.

I have just discovered a company, Concentric at Concentric.com, that has some great rates! For $6.95 a month (which is extremely affordable and comparable), you can get 2 GB disk storage, 100 MB traffic allocation, email, DNS manager, and more. I’m still surfing the site a little, checking out all the features, but thought you might want a heads up, too. They have a great Products & Solution page, and also offer web business services. Check it out, looks great!

InLine Comments for Blogger

Blogger, the most popular free blogging platform, has really been making leaps and bounds lately. I’m glad to see the newer developments with the software (better functionality, more user-friendly, etc). (I’m still waiting for some better templates… I guess I shouldn’t hold my breath about that, it’s been– what? 10 years with the same templates? Blogger dudes: lay off the excessive promotional products and get some new templates, eh?)

The main beef with Blogger, still, is their laborious and outdated comment form system. I just hate the popup comment boxes, and what’s worse is the “page” comment form that takes you away from the blog post. Oftentimes, I completely forget what I am going to say in my comment because the comments are so distanced from the post. WordPress has a much better comment system.

With that said, there’s a little tweak I’ve recently learned about, to give your Blogger blog an “inline comment form.” That is, at the bottom of your post is a little box where you can type in your comment text. Add name email, and URL, and you’re done! It’s a fine tutorial done by Blogger Buster, and you can see it here. I highly recommend it. Inline comment forms are far, far superior to Bloggers dumb old popup windows. Try it out and see if you suddenly have more comments to your posts!
