Abuzz About Apple

982749821

I own several i-devices from Apple and have been absolutely thrilled with the latest software update, iOS 5. I’ve always been very wary of new updates, ever since 4.3 crashed on my iPhone and wiped out everything. EVERYTHING. It was pretty lousy. So I hadn’t updated from 4.3…. what was that, no updates for 3 weeks? :-p

Thus I am joining the ranks of the Apple bees, abuzz with news and my excitement about the new operating system. It comes on the wings of the death of Steve Jobs. Even though he had been sick for a long time, I think we were all shocked to turn on our i-devices and read the news that he had passed away. I remember him from way, way back. I still own the first personal MacIntosh computer from 1984. It was when I was just getting “into” computers and even considered some F5 training courses and all. I even have the old Mac mouse and keyboard and dot matrix and old floppies! It’s been in storage a long time, I’m not even sure it works anymore…

Anyway, I never went for the computer science degree nor any Cisco IronPort training courses, but I do still remain deeply interested in computer technology. Apple’s meteoric rise in the past ten years has really changed everything. Who knew the iPhone would revolutionize cell phones?!

I love the iPhone. I never thought I would want one, but after I hit that little button, I was hooked. It’s a terrific device. I am thrilled with iOS 5 and even more thrilled that my iPhone survived the transition! My favorite feature has got to be the new Notifications. The old way drove me nutty, I love the new one. Do you have an i-device? What do you like best about the new iOS 5, if you have it?

Apple Sued Over Privacy Problems with Apps

stareye

And according to CNBC, Google may be next.

There are two separate groups initiating a class action suit, both in California, made up of iPhone and iPad users. They allege that apps for the devices are passing on user information to advertisers, without the consent of the users. The intent of the suits are to initiate a ban on such sharing, and getting financial compensation from Apple. In addition to Apple, Textplus4, Paper Toss, Weather Channel, Dictionary.com, Talking Tom Cat, and Pumpkin Maker are named in the suit. An investigation into Google’s Android phones may be next.

Personally, I’m all for the suits.

I’m sick and tired of arrogant companies who use consumers and our information like cattle. When we sign up to watch the weather or to play a game on a device, we should not have to give up our personal information. A deal is a deal.

Open Source (Free) Software for Mac Users

mac0980

I’m a PC-user and a Mac-user. And I’m a cheapskate and I like free software. :D

I am always hearing news about this-or-that program for PC users, but Mac users are somewhat left out in the cold. So I did some intensive searching and discovered a site that lists some excellent Mac software. Best of all, most of the stuff is free! It’s Open Source Mac. Of the programs that I have tried (and love) are these:

Adium for instant messaging
Bean a word-processor
XPad a superb, simple word-processor (my favorite)
Audacity for editing music and sounds
Xee an image browser
Freemind for making notes, etc
Stellarium a very cool interactive celestial map
Pixelmator a photo-editing program– but it’s not free. There’s a nice trial version, but the full version costs $60 :(

I can’t say I am crazy about Adium, just because the duck mascot is a little too toyish and childish. But it works well.

Hey you Mac users, got any other suggestions? I use a G4 processor, so that limits my choices a lot. GIMP and OpenOffice look great, but they require Intel processors. Bummer.

Expert Cat Burglars in Best Buy Heist

Wow. This is the stuff that movies and books are made of. Long ago, cat burglars would steal diamonds, emeralds, tiaras, and cash. What are thieves grabbing today?

Apple Macbooks.

*chuckle*

SOUTH BRUNSWICK — They never touched the floor — that would have set off an alarm.

They didn’t appear on store security cameras. They cut a hole in the roof and came in at a spot where the cameras were obscured by advertising banners.

And they left with some $26,000 in laptop computers, departing the same way they came in — down a 3-inch gas pipe that runs from the roof to the ground outside the store.

Police believe that’s how some brazen bandits managed to swipe 20 Apple notebooks early this morning at a Best Buy on Route 1 in South Brunswick without detection.

“High level of sophistication,” said Detective James Ryan, a police department spokesman. “They never set off any motion sensors. They never touched the floor. They rappelled in and rappelled out.”

Employees discovered the missing laptops, as well as a gaping hole in the ceiling, when they arrived to work around 6:30 this morning.

The thieves left boot prints on the gas pipe, which runs up the side of the building in Monmouth Junction, Ryan said.

On top of the building, they used a saw to cut through several inches of rubber and insulation, then sliced a 3-foot-wide square in the metal roof, he said.

Once inside, the burglars dropped 16 feet to 10-foot-tall racks — avoiding contact with the floor, where motion sensors would have set off an alarm. They snatched the notebooks from the racks, then went back out through the roof.

You can read the rest of the story here.

Well, This is Neat

This is just a small thing… I’d mentioned before that I got an Apple Aluminum keyboard, and I love it.

appleKeyboard

The tiles are very low, which makes typing effortless. Because I have the Apple keyboard hooked up to a Windows PC, there are some compatilibilty issues. For one, the specialized key functions (like the media keys) do not work. I care very little about this– I never used the media or specialized hotkeys with any of my Windows-compatible keyboards, either.

And although the Apple keyboard does not need any special software to run (it’s just Plug N Play with the USB port), sometimes the USB hardware device manager will uninstall and reinstall the keyboard intermittently. I have searched online for solutions to the problem, but can find no mention of it. This may be because there is a bug with my computer and not the keyboard… I’m still working on the issue and haven’t found any consistent patterns to help me resolve it.

Well, anyway, one very nice feature about the keyboard that I am discovering very useful is that the keyboard has two USB ports, one on each side. This is incredibly convenient.

In between hunting for business jobs, I took the time to reorganize my disaster of a desk today (yay!). I wanted to elevate my computer unit onto a higher shelf on my desk cabinetry (to keep it away from my curious cat who is proving to be quite destructive on the desk). I was concerned that my wireless mouse, which has always been plugged into the front USB port of the computer unit, wouldn’t work anymore, being out of range. I elevated my computer into the shelf, and I was correct– the mouse wouldn’t work. Nuts. Then I remembered the USB ports on the keyboard, so I plugged the wireless USB module into the Apple keyboard.

It works!!! It may be a rather insignificant thing, but to me, this enables my computer to be elevated on the shelf and off my main desk space. I have more space AND my wireless mouse works! LOVE IT!

So that’s just another reason why I love my Apple keyboard.

Vista’s Snipping Tool

I’d mentioned that I got a very cool Apple Aluminum keyboard for my Windows Vista computer. I am just loving this keyboard! I can type faster and I make fewer typing errors. It has made me more productive, and there’s nothing like a new gadget to inspire and motivate a person!

I’d said that some specialized keys don’t work for me (like the media keys, which I never used on PC keyboards, either). But I discovered that one of my favorite keys is missing– the “PrtScrn” key. I do a lot of copying my desktop, for image-making and for tutorial posts.

:(

I did a search and tried all the button variations I found online: Ctrl + Command + Fn + Shift + 3; Shift + Command + 4; Fn + Command + F11; argh! It wasn’t long before my fingers were aching from all the Twister-like variations I had to try, like Plantar Fasciitis on the hand, lol. And still nothing worked.

:(

I figured that I’d have to download some specialty software to get the function to work. I try not to go that route if I possibly can, because the last thing I need is another little program running in the background (or some weirdo thrid-party hack that is buggy). But then I read about something that Vista has already! It’s called Snipping Tool. Oh my goodness, this was just what I needed, and it is on my computer already! And better still, it’s sleek, it’s small, and it’s very easy to use. It’s even better than PrtScrn, because I can add some graphics (like highlighted text, or “write” with a colored pen of my choice.” Cool!

Below is a screenshot I took using Snipping Tool. It’s a screenshot of my blog post. I doodled on the image with a few of Snipping Tools features. It’s really a fun program.

Snipping Tool

And the next screenshot is something I took off Wikipedia. Snipping Tool saves/copies the images as JPEG files, which are the standard and most common image files– so everything is very compatible with everything else.

So if you have Vista and are looking for a keen little copying program, look for Snipping Tool. The easiest way to find it is to clck on your Vista “Start” button (the small round button on the bottom left hand side of your screen) and type in Snipping in the search bar. If you have it, it will show right up. If you want to save the shortcut to a more convenient location so you can access it quicker next time, right-click on the title “Snipping Tool.” A small menu will appear. Choose “Pin to Start Menu.” From now on, when you click on the Start button, you’ll see the Snipping Tool icon listed in your Start Menu for easy access.
