OMG Another Wordpress Update!

I knew it was bound to happen… I just didn’t think it would happen a week after the previous update!! Wow, lol. Well, I am thankful that the Wordpress Dudes (as I affectionately call them) are on their toes with security issues.

Yesterday a vulnerability was discovered: a specially crafted URL could be requested that would allow an attacker to bypass a security check to verify a user requested a password reset. As a result, the first account without a key in the database (usually the admin account) would have its password reset and a new password would be emailed to the account owner. This doesn’t allow remote access, but it is very annoying.

We fixed this problem last night and have been testing the fixes and looking for other problems since then. Version 2.8.4 which fixes all known problems is now available for download and is highly recommended for all users of WordPress.

So I guess I know what I will be doing this afternoon. :-p

Wordpress has now made it so easy to update, I thank them for that. In a nutshell, here’s how to do it:

  • First thing: BACK UP YOUR BLOG.
  • I do database backups just about every week (log into my web host’s cPanel and use their Backup Wizard). I also then use the “Export” feature in the Wordpress Dashboard. This saves all posts and comments in an XML file. It just saves the information, not your blog’s theme nor photos nor other dynamic content. I made a quick video tutorial about How to Exporting Your Blog in an XML File. It’s an “on the safe side” kind of backup tool.

  • Update and then disable plugins.
  • I used to disable all my plugins before doing any upgrade. Plugins are third-party software, and therefore may conflict with each other during the upgrade. However, for the past three recent upgrades, I have attempted leaving my plugins enabled, and I have had no problems. I do, however, ALWAYS upgrade my plugins before attempting my Wordpress upgrade.

  • Click the Wordpress “Please update now” link at the top of your Admin page.
  • This notification shows up on all your Wordress admin pages. I usually go to my Dashboard and proceed from there. The link will take you to a page within your admin site, giving a few scanty details, and clicking the link.

  • Go slowly, read everything, don’t be in a hurry to click the links.
  • I take my time whenever I upgrade. I make sure the kids are preoccupied, I am *relatively* clear-headed, and not in a hurry. I’ve had problems when I have been too click-happy. Depending on the speed of your web host’s server transactions, it may take a few more seconds to complete. Don’t rush anything!

  • If something happens, call your web host.
  • I have Hostgator as my web host (see the button to their website in my sidebar) and I have been thrilled with their service and support. I recommend them more than any other host (and believe me, I’ve had a lot of hosts). If your blog has problems, give them a call. You will have a database backup that you can fall back on (you DID make that backup, right??!), and they can reinstate the older version, and help you upgrade to the newer one. But I have never had any problem whatsoever with the new Wordpress upgrade feature– it’s run AMAZINGLY smoothly.

    Hope this helps!

    Backup Email with KLS Backup

I work from home, and saving emails and other correspondence is extremely important, for filing purposes. Printer ink is SO expensive, the last thing I want to do is print all my emails and store them in my filing cabinets! :S I haven’t found a good and simple email backup program that would just SAVE stuff and not add all these extra doodads like a Plano Cosmetic Dentist.

Well, not until now! I just tried out KLS Backup and I really like it! It not only saves email from all the “major” software programs (Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Windows Mail Live, Thunderbird), but also saves settings from Opera, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Seamonkey, and more. You can choose what files or folder you want saved, not as a big batch file of pre-determined settings. I love this!

The program is free to download and use. It’s a great one!

P.S. One suggestion I have before saving email– deleted all your junk mail and deleted messages before saving files. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a huge file filled with stuff you didn’t want to save, anyway.

    Easy Backup Software

I recently got a separate hard drive to backup my information. I LOVE it! I love knowing that my photos and important information is on something besides my main computer drive. The hardest thing that’s come up with backup in my data is the software. Actually, I don’t use any. I drag and drop everytime I make a change. :S It’s getting laborious.

There are some programs that will help sync your backups: EzBackup is one. This software program helps you to manage your data, and restore files if necessary. It also makes a copy of your hard drive onto another drive. Nice! The program is a little pricey, at $50, but you have the option to download free trial to give it a test run. They’re also having an EzBackup promotion, where you can get 51% off the software until February 9th. See the site for details.

    Talk About Peace of Mind!

    What spells relief? E X T E R N A L H A R D D R I V E!

This baby was on sale at Circuit City and I got one. (Thank God for business tax deductions!). My computer was acting a litttle funny, and I was in great fear that I’d lose another computer hard drive. I have some stuff backed up on a USB flash drive, but the drive is small and can’t hold my 3GB’s worth of photos, not to mention all my business financial files, saved blog information, and more. My data was a total mish-mash and mess, and I was never quite sure if I’d saved such-and-such on this-or-that. It was piling up and I was starting to get a little nervous.

Portable, external hard drives are dreams come true for making data backups. They are usually very small– my new Toshiba is the size of an index card– and all you do is plug it in your machine. Most external hard drives are about 250GB (that’s a LOT of space) although some are as big as 500GB; and I even saw 1 terabyte available. I think EHDs are still a little pricey, but just think– you can double or triple your computer disk space for a mere $70-100. All you do is plug it in your USB post and your computer sees it as another drive. You can use it to store everything on it, leaving your computer data-free if you want. I am considering wiping my computer of all my passwords and sensitive data and keeping all that stuff only on my EHD. And when I need the data for my other computer, I just take the EHD and plug it into that.

So I am loving my EHD! And I can finally sleep at night, knowing that my data is OK if my computer crashes or, God forbid, my computer is ever stolen or damaged.

    A Tutorial and a Contest

Well, there’s nothing like killing two birds with one stone, is there? There’s a terrific contest going on (I love video contests) called the XLM Contest.

XML is the abbreviation for “Extensible Markup Language.” XML is a special Internet language used by various software for markup language. Blogs and websites frequently use XML. I decided to make a video tutorial showing you how you can export your Wordpress blog content into an XML file that you can save onto your computer hard drive, for safe-keeping as a backup. We all know how important it is to make backups of your data, including blogs. I don’t know about you, but going into my cPanel to make MySQL database backups is a pain; I don’t always do it. But twice weekly or so I do make XML backups of my Wordpress blogs. Wordpress allows you to easily save and store your blog content– the XML download does not save photos or uploads or anything, just your posts, comments, and text stuff like it.

Since I wanted to enter the contest, and since I wanted to create a tutorial for Wordpress users, I thought I’d combine the two! The contest is open to anyone. It’s sponsored by IDUG and is also called the IDUG contest. Click the link to see the terms and conditions. All you have to do is make a video that has anything to do with XML. Maybe you write XML, maybe you can make a video tutorial like I have, or anything! There are actually five contests, each with its own set of prizes. A “Quick Quiz” is required for you to enter the contest (have no fear, it’s not that hard!). Submission deadline is January 19th, waste no time! So if you like contests and like to tinker with XML, you might want to check out the contest. Either way, you can check out my tutorial and see how to easily save your Wordpress data as an XML file. Remember to keep on backin’ up!
