Cloud Storage Is In: The Pros and Cons

cl097e

The latest buzz word in the technology industry is “the cloud.” It’s been around for several years. Basically, the “cloud” is online storage space on some server. Perhaps you’ve heard of Carbonite or iCloud? You can see a comprehensive list of both top US and Top UK cloud storage companies and pricing at the link. The “cloud” is merely online storage space. Think of it as a separate, external hard drive online. In the “olden” days, we stored our data, our photos, our documents and emails on our personal computers. The “cloud” allows you to store that data on an online server.

There are pros and cons to cloud storage, as you can imagine.

Pros:

  • Easy access to all your files online, from any computer.
  • You can share your files with others. Most cloud companies allow you to create “approved users,” so you can give Granny permission to access portions of your cloud data, too.
  • Cloud storage is a great backup for PC hard drive loss. Personal computer hard drives have become more reliable but the consumer products are much less reliable than the commercial drives that are kept in large, air-conditioned storage rooms.
  • Some cloud companies will automate backups for you. You can select the schedule for this process, such as every Monday at 3am. Of course, your computer must be on and connected to the Internet during this time.
  • If you have webmail or if you “sync” your web browser bookmarks between two computers, you are already using cloud storage. It can be very convenient!

Cons:

  • Most cloud storage costs money. You can go the cheap route, for example, and upload your documents to Gmail which gives users very generous storage space. But you will have to manually do this on a regular basis and attach it to emails, which is very inconvenient.
  • There is the possibility that cloud servers can be hacked. Most companies have very rigorous security measures and monitor their servers well, but we all know what a determined hacker can do….
  • To access your data, you must have an Internet connection. If you don’t keep any of your photos or documents on your PC but upload everything to the cloud, that data may be unavailable at time if you or your cloud server experiences downtime.
  • You can lose all your data from a natural disaster or a company bankruptcy.

The “cons” are rather far-fetched– what is the likelihood of a natural disaster striking YOUR server??– but you just never know. Still, for many people, the pros outweigh the cons, and many consumers seem to like having automated backups of their data and being able to access it anywhere. As a matter of fact, that has become the deciding factor for me. :)

Before you hop into the cloud fervor, weigh all your alternatives. Check prices and always check the company’s reputation and uptime guarantee.

Building a Business Social Networking Team

Smiling Group of Professionals

Perhaps your eyes crossed at the term “business social networking.” Business is business and social is social, no?

Well, yes and no. There’s a new movement in the business world (small and large business!): it’s social networking FOR the business. Every good business person realizes that a business is not efficient nor consumer-friendly when it is not truly working together as a team. A splintered business not only costs time and money, but it costs customers, too. The business world is extremely competitive, and consumers still want good, speedy service. A good business will meet that need. MSNBC has a great article about the rise of social networking in business environments.

Unfortunately, many businesses become tangled up in bureaucratic tape and managerial fiats. It’s very interesting to see a movement that embraces social networking within the business FOR the business. For example, let’s say a client requests a discount on goods or services. He asks the customer representative for this benefit. The customer representative does not have authority to offer a discount, and must go through the long chain of command to request it. (Anyone who has been “on hold” on the phone knows how long this process can take– often, the customer rep must file requests with accounting, inventory, and managers before obtaining a yay or nay for the client). Social networking within the business connects all these departments using typical social networking tools (such as Seismic or a desktop app) to obtain data very rapidly.

I find this interesting because, in the past and even now in many businesses, social networking is taboo at the office. It’s used for frittering away time, reducing productivity and increasing costs. But through the use of enterprise activity streams and other means, data and ideas flow freely from one department to another. And when a customer has his needs met in a timely and courteous fashion, that customer is much more likely to become a devoted client, even if it means paying a little more for the exceptional service.

Well, there’s certainly much more to business social networking than I mentioned here. Mine is a very simplified, condensed example of the incredible increase and power of social networking. Mixed Media Marketing- Got That?

semarke-0w-0

Internet media marketing is HOT, ladies and gentlemen. Finally.

I tentatively entered the world of media marketing thanks to my New York Traveler.net travel blog, which got the attention of advertisers and marketers in the travel arena. I quickly realized the vast potential before businesses (very small and very large and everyone in between), where they can increase exposure for a business or website or online niche. The Internet today is not your father’s Internet— the Internet has matured into a totally new animal. In the past, getting the word out about a product meant paying for expensive newspaper or TV ads. Today, this is not so. Today, a business may choose to focus entirely on an Internet audience, or they may even choose a blend of viral marketing with traditional marketing outlets (such as magazines and other printed material). The sky is really the limit. But know that the Internet cannot be overlooked anymore.

Honestly, I think it’s difficult to straddle the traditional marketing strategies with the new online ones. In my experience with marketing my travel website, I found that many in the advertising field still cling to the traditional “brochure/magazine/glossy junk mail” routine, and old fogies in the tourism departments had no idea of the power of viral marketing. But people are going online for more and more information. Those old ways of brochures and mailers are fading away. Of course, with the rise of Internet marketing comes the need for Internet marketing experts. I saw this very entertaining video by That! Advertising Agency. In true Internet style, they blend the whimsy and energy of the Internet generation with the savvy determination of the marketing industry. I like how they try to blend in both the “old media” and the “new media” as part of their brand of mixed media marketing.

Internet marketing is a little baffling to me, honestly. All those graphs, stats, strategies… truly this is the lair of media experts! If you are tired of the poor results of the old media and want to spice things up a bit, check out That! Advertising Agency. They offer one hour of free consulting, so you can test the waters. I like their emphasis on creative advertising campaigns. But for pete’s sake, DON’T throw your advertising dollars away for $2,000 for a full page ad in the New York Times until you’ve talked to a marketing consultant!

Finding High Quality Video Cam Streaming

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of faceVsion Technology USA. All opinions are 100% mine.

Socialspark_productimage When I took my business trip to New York City, I used my netbook’s little webcam to talk to the kids. The kids, unfortunately, did not have a webcam, so I could not see them. I used my instant messenger software to connect… and UGH what a stuttering, slow connection it was! Not very pleasant. It was too bad. Next time I want to be prepared for a better experience.

There’s this new gadget called faceVsion out. It’s incredibly innovative–it’s High Definition (HD), and it’s the first HD video cam certified by Skype for making HD video calls. faceVision uses embedded hardware H.264 encoding. This chip helps to create a 720-pixel, high-quality image suitable for video-to-video communications. It’s great for businesses (such as video conferencing) but it’s also a wonderful tool for the commuting family. The camera is very high-quality, with a quickly focusing super wide angle lens. It certainly looks very high tech! The official name is the FV touchcam N1. It’s on sale at retailers (such as Amazon, Staples, and NewEgg) for a little over $100. I think that’s very affordable for such a high-quality webcam. It leaves the other webcams (like Logitech’s and Microsoft’s) in the dust.

Read more about it, see an informative video about the cam, and learn more about the FV ExpressCombo at the faceVision on line store.

Additionally, you can save some money right now! www.shop.facevsion.com is now running a back-to-school promotion with $10 off any purchase, using the promo code of FVTBTS2 at the checkout. The promotion ends September 30th, 2010, so don’t delay.

“Check” It Out

I have to order new bank checks. Have you noticed your bank increasing the price of printing bank checks, or is it just me? I forked over $50 for two boxes of printed bank checks a few months ago! Yow. That bit the budget big time. I used to get checks through some mail-order service, but after switching to another bank, I had to re-order through the bank first (to get the routing number printed, etc). Those checks are just about used up, so now I can get my own style. :) And is it just me, or do the mail-order check printing companies look a little scammy? There are so many scams out there… I’m too nervous to order from them. I really don’t like my financial information circulating across the globe, even if it is a small sweatshop in China or India. :-p

Well, now that I am in the market for ordering new checks, something just dawned on me when I went to visit the site– VistaPrint checks! I love VistaPrint! I order through VistaPrint for my business cards and customized gift cards… I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of getting checks through them until now, duh! Isn’t this design lovely?

The fonts are customizable, and they have dozens and dozens of check designs. They even have three-to-a-page checks and computer checks in sheets for the business. And you can do everything online, instantly– and special monograms are only 99 cents extra! The checks are a fraction of what I was paying my bank. I love VistaPrint!

I highly, personally recommend VistaPrint. I’ve been doing business with them for years. They are a reliable company– they’ve grown tremendously over the past few years– and they consider customers to be their most important asset. They have a 100% satisfaction guarantee on all their products. And they have a ton of products! T-shirts, magnets, calendars, invitations, holiday cards, and tons more, for both business and personal use. VERY cool. “Check” out VistaPrint, I know you will like them!
