Did I mention that the prizes are luscious?? :D Wow.

The contest is easy to enter– you can go to the site (register here) to enter in one unique UPC code per day; you can also get one free entry by requesting a UPC code to enter (see the site for details and rules). The contest is open only to residents of Canada, though! The contest is running now through October 18, 2009, at midnight. Together We Can End Remote Rage

I know FOR A FACT that this has happened to you:

It’s night time. Everyone is sleeping soundly in their beds, but you can’t sleep and want to switch on the TV or movie for a little while. You press the “on” button on the TV, and BLAMMO!! 500 decibels of TV audio screams throughout the house! And worse, what’s playing at that moment is a Western with all the guns shooting off! Gah!! Where is that &@$%^@ REMOTE?! And which one is it?!

We’ve allllll been there. We all feel each others’ pain. How to resolve the situation? A universal remote? Hoh boy, don’t make me cry. Those things are SO LAME! Do you realize that when the remote batteries die and you place new ones in, you have to reprogram the WHOLE thing all over again?!?! :cuss: I found that out the hard way… and then I found out that I’d lost the programming paper with all the codes! GRRR.

RemoteGroup

OK OK, this post wasn’t intended to be a rant. Not exactly. It’s intended to be a SOLUTION. Because I found the hottest piece o’ technology, baby! It’s the Yamaha neoHD and it looks SWEET. It’s a remote control controller. It manages ALL your electronic entertainment components from ONE beautiful machine with ONE remote.

And better yet, there’s a Yamaha neoHD Sweepstakes going on. Win a Yamaha neoHD– an $800 value! Wowsa! Interested? Here’s how you enter:

  • At Twitter: tweet “I just entered to win a #neoHD b/c I have too many remotes, visit http://bit.ly/JMsW3 to enter!”
  • Go to http://izea.com/enter-yamahas-neohd-sweepstakes and leave a comment, saying why you desperately need the neoHD.

Feel free to get really creative, or rant a little. Me, I’m sick of the half-dozen remotes floating around this house– and two of them are the EXACT same! It’s maddening. The Yamaha neoHD is pretty slick. It would be so cool to win one. Check the sites for more information, and contest details. Togather we can end Remote Rage!

Big Charter Contest

Seems like a lot of companies are having contests or giveaways; that, or I am just noticing it more often. :) But one of the best giveaways I’ve seen so far is from Charter Internet service. I’m not surprised– Charter has been having some incredible promotions and giveaways. Last year, they gave away a Honda Hybrid car, and in another contest, they gave away laptops! Very nice!

So here’s another contest from Charter for Charter Communications customers– what do you do digitally that has changed your life? Maybe you get all your newsfrom the Internet now, or maybe you are able to see your son serving in Iraq on his webcam, or maybe you watch movies online instead of running out to the rental place. The Internet has certainly changed my life! I get all my education, news, communications, and entertainment from my beloved computer and Internet. Write your story and include photos or a video, and you could be the winner! It’s a really great giveaway, and if you have a talent for telling stories, you’d be a contender for sure!

Each week ffor eight weeks, Charter will give away either a 15″ laptop or a 52″ HDTV; at the end of the promotion, the grand prize winner will receive a 52″ HDTV AND a 15″ laptop AND a free year of the Charter Bundle (including Digital Cable with HD and DVR; Charter High Speed Internet, and Charter telephone service). It’s a really incredible giveaway. Charter usually doesn’t hold back when it comes to promotions, so this is a to check out. See Charter on Facebook or check out the Charter website.

Web Design For Idiots

Hmm, well I sure hate to classify myself, but… this looks like a site I will need to frequent! ha! This is a site by fellow Entrecarder and CMF member, Lindsayanng. She’s a “girlie geek” who has tutorials about web design, and often reviews other blogs. She’s turning the tables a little– holding a contest for people who will review her blog! It’s the web design for idiots 500 free business card giveaway contest. Try your hand at reviewing her site, it’s not a difficult task — she’s looking for honest reviews! And the prizes are very nice: First prize is 500 business cards designed by the girlie geek herself. Second prize is a free 8×10 fine art print from bscphoto.com.

I like the blog, I recently came across it. I am a “self-made” geek as well, learning everything by trial and error and through tutorials on the Internet. I think there are a number of us gals around the ‘Net like that. :D

Back to the contest: the winner be chosen by Lindsayanng, who will use her incredible geeky powers of discrimination and taste, and she will judge according to your content, suggestions, and writing style. Use good grammar and spelling, too. Be sure to email Lindsayanng (reviews@webdesignforidiots.net) and leace a comment at the blog post to ensure she is aware of your magnus opus. Have fun!

A Tutorial and a Contest

Well, there’s nothing like killing two birds with one stone, is there? There’s a terrific contest going on (I love video contests) called the XLM Contest.

XML is the abbreviation for “Extensible Markup Language.” XML is a special Internet language used by various software for markup language. Blogs and websites frequently use XML. I decided to make a video tutorial showing you how you can export your WordPress blog content into an XML file that you can save onto your computer hard drive, for safe-keeping as a backup. We all know how important it is to make backups of your data, including blogs. I don’t know about you, but going into my cPanel to make MySQL database backups is a pain; I don’t always do it. But twice weekly or so I do make XML backups of my WordPress blogs. WordPress allows you to easily save and store your blog content– the XML download does not save photos or uploads or anything, just your posts, comments, and text stuff like it.

Since I wanted to enter the contest, and since I wanted to create a tutorial for WordPress users, I thought I’d combine the two! The contest is open to anyone. It’s sponsored by IDUG and is also called the IDUG contest. Click the link to see the terms and conditions. All you have to do is make a video that has anything to do with XML. Maybe you write XML, maybe you can make a video tutorial like I have, or anything! There are actually five contests, each with its own set of prizes. A “Quick Quiz” is required for you to enter the contest (have no fear, it’s not that hard!). Submission deadline is January 19th, waste no time! So if you like contests and like to tinker with XML, you might want to check out the contest. Either way, you can check out my tutorial and see how to easily save your WordPress data as an XML file. Remember to keep on backin’ up!
