He’s Back…

HAL. Er, uh, I mean, my little computer. He’s been moping about how slow he is, how hard I push him, yadda yadda. I just think he’s been spending too much time at those computer technology sites…

It’s a tough life, ya know! I have upwards of 6 kids pounding my keys, pushing my processor (I just have ONE processor, if you’ll remember!), playing games, and doing stuff on Paint Shop Pro… I get tired much more sooner with all this work!

I have to admit, maybe he’s right. We have “twin” computers (two exactly alike that we bought at the same time) the we got several years ago. One of them no longer plays CDs or DVDs, another keeps crashing…. we use the computers for our homeschool, so we must have computers here.

Maybe you should look into giving us an early retirement, huh? At least get us away from the kids and that irritating Toy Story computer game! I’m ready to pound Buzz Lightyear in the nose.

Well, I’m definitely going to keep working these computers until they can work no more… but there’s a sweet deal at HP that’s just in time for school– a $30 stackable site-wide coupon! :D The promo code for the coupon is SV2132. You can get $30 off orders of $150 or more (good until October 31, 2009, or while supplies last). It’s a very nice promotion before school, I think.

Plus, HP is having a nice Labor Day sale– 50% off on select items! There’s a beautiful little Pavilion desktop that’s looking really sweet. I think it would be perfect next to me on the desk, don’t you think?

Uh, HAL is getting a little carried away, don’t listen to him! We do not need anymore desktops!

…what we DO need is a sweet little laptop, oh yeah….

Away From the Office

Need a little getaway, away from the office, the smell of overly strong coffee in styrofoam cups, the eyestrain from staring into computer screens all day? I know I do! We like to take day trips, but every once in a while, it’s so great to go on an extended trip, just to RELAX and do nothing for a while. However, we prefer a more relaxed atmosphere, too– lots of cultural stuff, but no Disney-esque bells and whistles ringing ’round our heads. My kids have this strong desire to see the MidWest and Western states someday.

One place we are definitely going to have to see is the beautiful area of Branson, Missouri. I’ve heard a lot about it (I’d never even heard about Branson until a few months ago) and this looks like the perfect place to enjoy just about everything yet still have a laid-back, relaxing atmosphere. The Hilton Promenade at Branson Landing caters to families, with their family-fun activities like the upcoming Father’s Day Salute, a National Kid’s Fest at Silver Dollar City, and the 10th Annual Clown Jam. There are also various cultural and historical places to see and visit in the area, plus the Hilton Branson Convention Center Hotel hosts tons of cool concerts and crusades that we keep hearing about. The Hotel has an excellent presence on the Internet- some great websites for making reservations, finding out more information about the hotel and local events, and more. Really cool!

So if you’re looking for a relaxing but fulfilling getaway in the beautiful MidWest, check out what Branson has to offer. They have deals and specials going on all summer long.

Great Software Deal

An incredible coincidence- I’ve been blogging about a series on securing your computer (firewalls, anti-virus, spyware checkers, etc), and tonight, while scanning Buy.com for their weekly sale, I came across an incredible deal on Webroot Spy Sweeper 3 software program. After the rebate, it’s only $11! And the shipping is free. This is a GREAT deal. Webroot Spyware Sweeper is a highly-rated spyware program, and is usually sold retail at about $40.

Every computer needs a spyware checker– over time, as you visit websites and view pages and images, your computer becomes clogged with tracking ads that trace your Internet surfing habits, images files that slow down your computer, and– worse of all– malicious files that can threaten your computer health and perhaps send you personal data to hackers. I usually recommend three to four spyware-killing type programs. Webroot Spyware Sweeper is very highly recommended and the $11 is an incredible deal.

Buy.com is my new favorite store. They have the best prices around and I like that they offer free shipping. The weekly sales page at the website has become a new routine for me, as I check the site for great deals on electronics and all sorts of other stuff (housewares, books, etc). I recommend Buy.com overall– they really go the second mile for the consumer and the prices are phenomenal! Check out their weekly sales page for more deals. I love them!

Late February Online Deals

As in the “real” retail world, online stores are currently having clearances and excellent savings on a lot of stuff. This is a great time to nab some deals, especially at Buy.com. Buy.com has become my favorite store for electronics and accessories. I recently bought a new digital camera there, with some CRV-3 batteries and a battery charger. I am wowed by their excellent servce and the deals are incredible!

Buy.com has a weekly sale webpage. I keep tabs on it to see if anything from my list shows up there. Because I homeschool and I also have a small home business, I’m always in need of various items, like USB flash drives, computers and computer accessories, software, etc. I saw this portable laptop desk on sale for this week– I think I love it!

laptopdesk

You see, every kid here needs a desk to work at while doing his/her schoolwork. But desks are SO expensive, and I can’t say they are made to be very durable anymore. :-p So a laptop desk is perfect! Guess how much it is?! Guess guess!!!

$9!!! And to think that I paid $35 for one last year. :-p I’m NEVER shopping for this stuff at the local retailer anymore, not when there is Buy.com.

Buy.com has more than electronics, too. They have housewares, apparel, games, jewelry, toys, software, music, DVDs, lots more. Their prices are unbeatable, and they rate as my favorite online store. Check out Buy.com for prices and service before going anywhere else! I love Buy.com!

UPDATE: While placing an order at Buy.com, I noticed that there is a promotion going on– buy anything at Buy.com and get a free GoDaddy domain name. This is a really great deal. Be sure to look for the green GoDaddy banner (at the top of the ordering page) and check the box that says “Simply check this box and then proceed to checkout.”

Buying Tech Gear Online

Hands down, one of the best places to get tech gear is Buy.com. I’ve shopped around a lot, and I think Buy.com has the best prices and the most reliable brands. I’ve seen a sharp rise in costs at the other tech stores, but Buy.com has been offering sale upon sale. And their customer service is excellent. Not to mention, they have some really cute viral videos with Howie Mandell these days.

And I finally found a good price on an SD card for my camcorder– the Kingston 8GB 120minute Class 4 SD card, a steal for about $20. If you buy SD cards, make sure they have a high write speed (no cheapos!) because the high speed SD cards write your photos and video faster to the memory card. Class 4 is a good write speed (4 MB/s-26x) for digital cameras and camcorders. If you use a cheapo, you will have a delay and/or a severe diminishing of quality. I only use the higher grade, higher-speed SD cards now. The difference is noticeable. High-speed SD cards tend to be a little pricey (like $40), so finding one of this size (8GB) at under $20 is a real steal, believe me. And Kingston is a reliable brand.

OK, so more deals? Here are more goodies I’ve found at their weekly deals page. (By the way, it is helpful to check out their weekly sale page once a week to keep tabs on prices.) Hot deals that I liked:

  • Acer Aspire netbook with Intel Atom processor, 160GB hard drive, Windows XP (it’s gorgeous)
  • Western Digital 500GB portable hard drive $120
  • Imation Apollo 250GB portable hard drive $60
  • Motorola H695 Bluetooth Headset $24
  • D-Link EBR-2310 Ethernet Broadband Router $22!! (I have got to get a new one, my old Westell is ailing)

And there’s a lot more stuff to be found. Of course, Buy.com has loads of stuff for everyone: jewelry, games, books, apparel, baby items, etc. But I like to shop the electronics stuff (wonder why, huh!) and they have good prices and free shipping on qualifying orders, too. They are a very reliable company with a history of great customer service. I recommend them!
