He’s Back…

HAL. Er, uh, I mean, my little computer. He’s been moping about how slow he is, how hard I push him, yadda yadda. I just think he’s been spending too much time at those computer technology sites…

It’s a tough life, ya know! I have upwards of 6 kids pounding my keys, pushing my processor (I just have ONE processor, if you’ll remember!), playing games, and doing stuff on Paint Shop Pro… I get tired much more sooner with all this work!

I have to admit, maybe he’s right. We have “twin” computers (two exactly alike that we bought at the same time) the we got several years ago. One of them no longer plays CDs or DVDs, another keeps crashing…. we use the computers for our homeschool, so we must have computers here.

Maybe you should look into giving us an early retirement, huh? At least get us away from the kids and that irritating Toy Story computer game! I’m ready to pound Buzz Lightyear in the nose.

Well, I’m definitely going to keep working these computers until they can work no more… but there’s a sweet deal at HP that’s just in time for school– a $30 stackable site-wide coupon! :D The promo code for the coupon is SV2132. You can get $30 off orders of $150 or more (good until October 31, 2009, or while supplies last). It’s a very nice promotion before school, I think.

Plus, HP is having a nice Labor Day sale– 50% off on select items! There’s a beautiful little Pavilion desktop that’s looking really sweet. I think it would be perfect next to me on the desk, don’t you think?

Uh, HAL is getting a little carried away, don’t listen to him! We do not need anymore desktops!

…what we DO need is a sweet little laptop, oh yeah….

A Day in the Life Of…

… my hard-working HP computers…

The poor thing. This heat and humidity is TERRIBLE for a computer. I have a slew of them (the kids and I), and we were almost SURE we could hear them heaving, sighing, and complaining…

Holy cow, this heat! Can’t these people shut me off for just a little while? So I can cool back down to the boiling point or something? *pant pant* work, work, work, that’s all I do!

Honest! That what the machines seemed to be saying! :hrm:

I do feel sorry for the machine, but a gal HAS to make a living…

Living, schmiving. I’m sweltering! And I’m also sick and tired of this operating system! When are you going to get me updated, huh?

:cwazy: lol. My computers can talk! Well, that’s OK, just as long as they don’t start calling me “Dave.” 8-O

I love HP. I will ONLY buy HP monitors, for starters. I have a verrrry nice 23″ LCD monitor for my work station, with my “HP Hot Rod” machine as I call it (AMD Phenom Quad-Core processor, NVIDIA GeForce 9100 video card, 6 GB RAM, and 640GB hard drive). We also have a slew of “lesser” HPs– a few with Intel Celeron processors for the kids, two laptops– one dual-core and another single-core. All very nice. Not to mention I have HP keyboards, monitors, printers, etc etc. I’ve found HP to be a thoroughly reliable brand. And did I say how much I LOVE their monitors?! They have the BEST monitors- very clear and crisp. Because I have poor eyesight and because I have a job that has me starting at the computer screen all day, I need a high-grade, quality monitor. HP has what’s called “BriteView” technology, and I think it is superior.

But the girls’ laptops, which are several years old, are starting to complain. For one, they are a tad outdated. (A computer more than five years old is considered “old.”). The fan on one of them has completely pooped out, another has a power button that doesn’t work anymore, and on another, the monitor is starting to show it’s age.

Who you calling old, sister?? I just need a little TLC… and air conditioning.

How about you? Your computers feeling a little slow and sluggish? Looking forward to ditching your Windows ME or XP for the flashy Windows Vista? I love Vista. :D Well, here’s a very nice promotional deal for you:

Get $500 off instantly when you purchase an HP HDX 16t with $300 coupon code NBN3248 + $200 Instant Rebate. The offer is valid through 8/23 or while supplies last. Restrictions and exclusions apply.

It’s a great time to get a new computer– manufacturers are moving out the Vista machines to make room for the Win7 machines. I may try to nab a good deal or two, also, so we can finally retire some of the old workhorses around here.

I’m afraid I can’t let you do that, Dave.

8-O

A Great Online Printing Tool

Here’s a really neat (and free!) online printing application from HP: HP Smart Web Printing. There’s a sufficient tutorial at the website, but basically this application allows you to “select, collect, store, combine, and print” the graphics and text you want on a single page or two or whatever. It’s like a newspaper editing application– you can move your graphics and text around in various areas until you have them just where you want, and print it as it is seen on your screen. Nice! It’s free, too.

I wish I’d known about this all those years ago, when the kids and I labored over their school reports cover sheets. :-p It took FOREVER to get those graphics with the text *just right* in Microsoft Word, UGH!

Finding the HP Elite Wireless Keyboard

I work at the computer just about all day, typing. That’s how I justify my fussiness when it comes to computer monitors and keyboards. :) Seriously, I am REALLY fussy about my peripheral equipment. And I think I’ve finally found my dream keyboard! It’s the HP Elite Wireless Keyboard.

Now, I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would get a wireless keyboard– I spend enough money on batteries, for my camera and all the kids’ toys and bangles, ya know? It’s gotten to the point where I’ll be soon needing to buy batteries like industrial supplies, in bulk! Sheesh! But the HP Elite is, so far, not a battery eater… and really, it would be worth it even if it was! What a great keyboard!

The keyboard was not easy to find. Only Hewlett-Packard sells it, on their website. I first came across the keyboard while browsing electronics at a store. It comes as a peripheral for a new computer out by HP, a touch-screen all-in-one computer. The computer is pretty neat but I can’t imagine getting a touch screen. I’m not “handy” like that (I prefer tools like the mouse), and I’d be washing the thing CONTINUALLY. Not practical. But I saw the keyboard that came with it and fell in love.

After seeing the HP model, I went in search of the keyboard, to check it’s price and buy it, if it was reasonable. But nobody stocked it! I searched online, tried search engine shopping, checked all the electronics stores I knew, I asked sales reps at the stores, etc. Nothing! The sales reps said the keyboard was not available for independent purchase. The manager at Staples said I’d probably have to buy the HP Touch Screen computer ($1300) iif I wanted to get this kind of keyboard. Haha, NO THANKS. $1300 just to get a keyboard?! Is he insane?

So a guy at Best Buy advised me to check the HP site. Even then, it was difficult finding it, because the keyboard has no name or identifying number besides the model number. And when I punched that number into the HP site, I got a lot of unhelpful search results. Finally I found it, buried in search results, where it is named HP Elite Wireless. And it was– amazingly- affordable! $30 with free shipping! I was blown away. It came in the mail, last week.

HP Elite front

HP Elite side

You can see that it’s very thin, with those Scrabble-like tiles that I admire. The HP Elite is a lot like the Apple aluminum keyboard I like so much (I have trouble using the Apple keyboard with my Vista machine), with its low profile. I’ve searched for thin keyboards, but haven’t had much success finding anything suitable and affordable. The closest I ever got was seeing a Kensington model, with a price tag of $80!!! Whoooaaaa! No thanks!

I love the HP. It was a breeze to install– just plug the wireless USB device into the computer, insert the included batteries, and I was all set. The two AAA batteries are still at 100% charge (there’s a keyboard battery monitor that will install in your tasktray). The range is excellent. I was able to type across the room, 20 feet away. I haven’t tried the keyboard to see if it works behind walls yet.

The low profile of the keys is very nice. I type all day, and my hands get so tired. The low-profile reduces fatigue. It’s also a simple keyboard– no bells and whistles. I have no need for magnifying/media/lock buttons all over my keyboard. I’m relieved to have JUST the basics for this one (although the HP does have a very convenient Sleep button). She’s a Plain Jane, but she’s doing the job better than any other!

I like it. It’s stable and suited for PCs, unlike the Apple aluminum (that kept installing and uninstalling throughout the day, it was weird). So I’m very happy with my purchase. If you’re looking for a thin, simple, wireless keyboard– I recommend the HP Elite Wireless!

Random Tech Thoughts For a Rainy NY Day

It’s raining here today. Again. My plans for yard work are dashed. Oh well. I turn my attention to my blogs. I don’t have anything worth stretching out into individual posts… so I’ll jot down some random tidbits I’ve been dwelling on.

Opera’s update to 9.64 is a failure. The updated browser slowed my browsing down to a crawl, and interrupts my music player (Napster) when it runs. The music stutters and slows when I browse. I tried the alpha Opera 10.00 version, but that has some bugs (like a thick black line across areas of the screen). So I dumped Opera 9.64 and 10 and went back to 9.63. What a difference!

I’m loving the art of screencasting right now. Screencasting is making a “video” of your desktop as you do things on it. It’s a great tool for tutorials. So far, the best screencasting program is CamStudio. I’ve also tried Jing and liked it, but you can’t save the screencast to your computer– you have to upload and access the file online at a website. Bummer. And I do like AviScreen, too, but it is a little slow and the GUI looks like Windows 98.

I’m avoiding HP computers as much as I can. I got two HP Pavilions two years ago– nice machines, I thought– but they are both starting to show signs of hardware failure. I must have computers, because we use them for the kids’ schooling, for image editing, and video-creating. The last thing I want to do is have to buy more computers! But if and when I do, I think I am through with the buggy HP. I have a Toshiba and an Acer that has never given me any problems. I’ve seen some Gateways on sale– are Gateways good? Anyone have experience with Gateway?

I was thinking about reformatting my computer, but after helping someone else do it recently, I’ve changed my mind. What a job.

The paid-posting business has really slowed down. I made good money last year, but this year looks like I may make only 1/3 of last year’s earnings. A lot of it has to do with PageRank. Of which I have none. The jerks.

I’m never buying a single-core processor computer again. Tooooo slow. I have an AMD Phenom X3 and I have to say I love it. When I go to the kids’ HP computer with it’s cheapo Intel Celeron and 256MB RAM, it’s like waiting for molasses to pour. Plus, the kids have all these computer games that they can’t play on the HP (and that they want to play on my X3!). Ugh.

I’m having a hard time figuring out how to take closeup photos with my Kodak z1012. That macro button eludes me. I have some nice flowers shots but they always turn out blurry. And I try to take weirdo shots (like a tick we found on our cat– he really needs Frontline or something) to post on the blogs for fun. But everything turns out blurry!! It doesn’t help that my camera manual is online only. :-p That’s even less incentive for me to read it.

Well, that’s enough randomness for today! Back to work…
