Simple Tweak To Monitor Your PC Connections

Many programs on your computer make connections to your network or to the Internet. There are some programs you want to connect to the Internet: your instant messenger, your email, your browser, and so on. But there are also some other connections you do not want leaching out, such as bandwidth-hogging software and spyware. Here’s a terrific tweak to check up on all connections on your PC.

1. Go to the Start Menu. Click “Run.” Type “cmd” and click the “OK” button. This will open the DOS Command window.

2. Type in the following, including the spaces:

netstat -b 5 > activity.txt

3. Wait two or three minutes. Press “Ctrl” and “C” on your keyboard.

4. Go back to the DOS Command window. Type in the following:

activity.txt

This will open Notepad or your default text editor.

5. View the Internet activity in the file.

Of course, the next step is being able to interpret the data. :D

Hat tip to Digital Inspiration for the tweak.

InLine Comments for Blogger

Blogger, the most popular free blogging platform, has really been making leaps and bounds lately. I’m glad to see the newer developments with the software (better functionality, more user-friendly, etc). (I’m still waiting for some better templates… I guess I shouldn’t hold my breath about that, it’s been– what? 10 years with the same templates? Blogger dudes: lay off the excessive promotional products and get some new templates, eh?)

The main beef with Blogger, still, is their laborious and outdated comment form system. I just hate the popup comment boxes, and what’s worse is the “page” comment form that takes you away from the blog post. Oftentimes, I completely forget what I am going to say in my comment because the comments are so distanced from the post. WordPress has a much better comment system.

With that said, there’s a little tweak I’ve recently learned about, to give your Blogger blog an “inline comment form.” That is, at the bottom of your post is a little box where you can type in your comment text. Add name email, and URL, and you’re done! It’s a fine tutorial done by Blogger Buster, and you can see it here. I highly recommend it. Inline comment forms are far, far superior to Bloggers dumb old popup windows. Try it out and see if you suddenly have more comments to your posts!

Mozilla FireFox Tweaks

Here’s a webpage I found, linking to some very helpful and easy tweaks for your Firefox browser. I haven’t tried them myself yet, but I looked a few over and they don’t look too bad at all! There are things with Firefox I have been wanting to tweak, so I bookmarked this for future reference.

The page is here. Includes some tweaks on how to get that Windows Media Player working in Firefox (something that took me weeks to figure out on my own!), etc.

Some folks offer their plugins as a way to fix a problem or tweak the browser. One word of warning– I recommend that you never download any plugin from any source unless it is directly through the Mozilla site itself. In other words, it’s risky to download plugins that are offered by individuals outside of the Mozilla team. If you see a plugin at someone’s website and want to see if Mozilla has it, go to the Mozilla Add-Ons page and do a search for the name of the plugin.

And don’t have too many plugins for your browser– keep your Firefox clean and sparse. Plugins, while very convenient, tend to slow the browser, cause crashes, and can sometimes be a security risk.
