Good News For Scheduled Post WordPress Users

There was some problem with the new WordPress 2.9 release that occurred a few weeks ago: complaints were rolling in that scheduled posts were not publishing. I didn’t experience the problem (I hadn’t any scheduled posts), so I don’t know if the issue affected any of my blogs. But the WordPress dudes have solved the problem with the release of 2.9.1.

After over a million downloads of WordPress 2.9 and lots of feedback from all of you, we’re releasing WordPress 2.9.1. This release addresses a handful of minor issues as well as a rather annoying problem where scheduled posts and pingbacks are not processed correctly due to incompatibilities with some hosts. If any of these issues affect you, give 2.9.1 a try. Download 2.9.1 or upgrade automatically from the Tools->Upgrade menu in your blog’s admin area.

I know quite a handful of WordPress users who will be happy to see this! Since it’s not a security release, I don’t thunk it’s a critical update. However, I usually update when I can. just so I don’t have a huge update to do the next time another major release is issued.

WordPress 2.8.3

Well, they’ve updated it again! What is this, the third/fourth time in two/three months? It looks like this latest update addresses an unchecked security bug. An astute WordPress user alerted the WordPress geeks to the security leak, which was promptly fixed. It is advised that all WordPress users update immediately.

Unfortunately, I missed some places when fixing the privilege escalation issues for 2.8.1. Luckily, the entire WordPress community has our backs. Several folks in the community dug deeper and discovered areas that were overlooked. With their help, the remaining issues are fixed in 2.8.3. Since this is a security release, upgrading is highly recommended.

Thank God WordPress is easier to update. If I was still manually updating 7, 8 blogs everytime WordPress issued an update… well, let’s just say that Typepad would look a lot better! But I do love WordPress, I admit.

WordPress 2.8.1

Yes, WordPress users, believe it or not— there’s another WordPress update. It’s 2.8.1.

WordPress 2.8.1 fixes many bugs and tightens security for plugin administration pages. Core Security Technologies notified us that admin pages added by certain plugins could be viewed by unprivileged users, resulting in information being leaked. Not all plugins are vulnerable to this problem, but we advise upgrading to 2.8.1 to be safe.

I just updated all seven of my blogs to 2.8 just a few weeks ago. I like 2.8– it’s a great piece of software. I just tire of updating all these blogs every few weeks! But 2.8.1 fixes a bundle of security issues, so the sooner you do it, the better. Be sure to update all your plugins and make backups of your blogs’ databses before you hit the update button! I backup two separate ways– I use the WordPress admin way (Dashboard>>Tools>>Export) to download an XML file of all my posts, comments, etc. Know that this kind of backup will only backup your written data. It will not backup your theme nor your images nor your plugins. That’s why I have two separate backup systems. The second backup system I use saves all that data– through my web host’s cPanel Backup Wizard. Every host and cPanel is slightly different, so consult your web host for more details on how to do that.

Several months ago, I made a quick video on how to backup your blog into xml format throught the WordPress dashboard.

Comodo Firewall Problems with Vista

After being nagged for a few weeks by my Comodo Firewall Security software, I finally decided to update the software for my Windows Vista x64 machine. Oops. Looks like there’s a bug with the Updater… a bug that Comodo REALLY should have fixed, in my opinion. After installing Comodo 3.8.65951.477, my operating system would not boot up any .exe file for x32 programs. Which meant that my browsers would not work, my instant messengers, my email program, etc. Nothing would load. I had to uninstall the firewall to get anything to work, to get online and find out what was causing the problem.

It is not wise to be without a firewall. I am helping a friend right now who has been afflicted with a very nasty virus because he was using the lame Windows Firewall in Vista. I am terrified of getting a virus!

After a little searching around, I found out that Comodo 3.8.65951.477 has a bug with Vista x64 users who have Lavasoft’s Ad-Aware installed. The advice in the forums was to uninstall Ad-Aware and reinstall Comodo. I did, and thank GOD it worked! I’m back in business!

It is very unfortunate that such bugs continue without a fix, or, at the very least, without notification. My heart almost stopped when my computer programs wouldn’t load. I know it’s hard, finding someway to inform hundreds of thousands (or millions) of users of an bug issue. Before breaking out the custom rubber stamps, however, it would be nice if the “beta” stage lasted a bit longer before releasing an update. Or, at least, put up a notice on the main page or something. It would sure save plenty of folks a day’s worth of agony! :D
