Too Lijit to Quit!

I’ve been using the Lijit Search Engine widget for a few of my blogs for a few months now, and I have to say: I LOVE IT!

Lijit is a plugin for WordPress, Typepad, and Blogger blogs. Any blogger who writes informatively really should have this widget– Lijit is so impressive and so powerful that a blog would seem empty without it. I have Lijit installed on several of my blogs (including this one), and it is perhaps the most effective on my travel blog, New York Traveler.net. That blog is filled with information, photos, videos, tips, and links to thousands and thousands of bits of information that I could not otherwise organize. Lijit gives visitors the ability to thoroughly search that blog for even the smallest bit of information (everything from pet supplements to hurricanes!).

Lijit on New York Traveler

The Lijit widget is 100% customizable. And you can see from the screenshot above that I have included the ability for readers to search not only my travel blog, but all my Flickr photos, my YouTube videos, and mo other blogs as well. And when the Lijit window pops up with search results, there is the ability for readers to search my blog for relevant information, for content (photos, videos, etc), my network (other blogs in my blogroll) and etc. And lijit includes small screenshots with the search results, too. It’s a really professional look. Here are some screenshots showing a quick search I did on “erie canal.” (more…)

Very Cool Travel Sites

Looking for some ideas, information, or some armchair travel ideas? I’ve been bookmarking some of my favorites lately, and thought I’d share them. These sites center mainly on attractions to visit within the United States. The photos on some of the websites are spectacular. And there’s a good mix of sites here– some highlight touristy stuff with professional photos and articles by writers who’ve obviously had some kind of sales training; others are homey, travel journal articles by amateur travelers themselves; others have “off the beaten path” type posts; and others are reviews, critiques, and other assorted interests relating to travel. All are interesting sites! I also included my own travel blog, in case you had a hankering to see Upstate New York. :D

Discover America
Roadside America (one of my favorites to peruse)
Road Trip Journal
Road Trip Journal Blog (this is a companion to Road Trip Journal– the blogger is traveling from California to New York State! A great travelogue to follow)
TripAdvisor Never stay at a hotel without checking this site first.
Uptake
Trusted Tours & Attractions (they have discount tickets prices for certain cities)

Compare Your AntiVirus Programs

Here’s a great site that has a terrific comparison table of the various antivirus software programs out there: AntiVirusWare.com. The comparison table gives a very readable breakdown of all the various features for the most popular antivirus programs, including Norton Antivirus, Kapersky, BitDefender, Avira, and more. I don’t know about you, but I like to be able to compare the various software programs, especially if there are a lot to choose from– and with antivirus programs, there ARE a lot to choose from. I’d been using AVG for years, but now that I use Windows Vista, I’ve had updating problems and a lot of false positives in the virus vault lately. Right now I am using Comodo’s free antivirus program, but I’m still staying on the watch for other programs. And I also like to know what’s what with them all. :D

Anyway, if you have a hankering to know everything there is to know about antivirus issues and software, check out the AntiVirusWare.com website. They also offer the ability to download the antivirus programs, including the newly released Norton AntiVirus 2009 download. There are also great articles at the site, like “What is a Computer Virus,” “How to Avoid Infecting Your Computer,” and a history of viruses. Great site!

Promote Your Stuff

Wow, this has got to be the largest Promotional Gifts website of promotional products I’ve ever seen. They have everything under the sun! Calculators, t-shirts, clothing, mugs, key chains, tools, clocks– everything! It’s AnyPromo.com. They have over 200,000 products that you can customize for your business, school, organization, contest, conference, or for personal use. Some of the stuff is especially fun (I like whimsical items). For example, how about some unique, color-flashing, lit-up mugs, possibly to promote your restaurant? The kids would love them! Or how about a pen cup with an alarm clock and thermometer? Or a wooden handheld mirror, or a tournament pack golf ball set, or some baseball caps? The amount of products is really overwhelming! Promotional products are a great way to promote your organization or company, and to get your logo and name out there. Also, a lot of these items would make really great gifts! Everything can be personally customized with your own logo or design. The prices are excellent, too– that nice pen cup with an alarm clock and thermometer that I saw is under $6 with a minumum purchase of 25 count. Promote your business, your school, your conference or event, or just yourself! Check out the website for more details: AnyPromo.com.

Videos for Your iPhone

Well, the very cool thing about the iPhone is it’s Inter-connectability. I think I would LOVE an iPhone, just for that purpose. (It’s the $300 price tag that makes me reconsider!). How about you? Have you got an iPhone? If so, check out this site for videos: Vuzu. The quality of the videos is much better than YouTube, and Vuzu is building a large collection of entertainment and music videos. Vuzu is fully viewable for desktop PCs, too. If you go to Vuzu, check out the “William Tell Slap Shot.” AMAZING! Vuzu costs nothing to use. It’s free to register and upload videos.

They’ll Do the Hard Work For You

I was THIS close to throwing in the towel on WordPress blogging this week. What a rollercoaster ride! I’ve been trying to organize my MySQL databases, so I might transfer all my blogs to new hosts, transfer my domains, change nameservers, etc. It was a NIGHTMARE. I was very tempted to hire out the work, I was at wit’s end. I finally got some technical support to get me over the hard part, but I still do have a lot of work to do.

Lots of people, especially small businesses, are looking for easy do-it-yourself, painless websites (especially smal business, which are short on time and money but big on demand). If so, check out some nice membership website software, Wild Apricot. They have high ratings and the software packages are extremely flexible and diverse. GREAT for e-commerce sites that are so fluid with data and need to look and feel professional. And they’re offering a free 30-day trial, too.
